Recycling, serving locally grown food, conserving energy, using earth friendly products, and decorating with local flora are just a few ways that you can color your event green. It’s no longer a choice, or a passing fad, but a necessity to employ an environmentally conscious approach to everything that we do…including event planning. I carefully consider the environmental impact of my planning methods, and strive to make the best choices possible for maintaining the beauty that surrounds us on the earth.
A few tips for greening your event:
~ Shuttle participants to the event using transportation such as buses that use bio-diesel fuel, or encourage carpooling/vanpooling
~ Decorate with potted perennials instead of cut flowers, and send them home w/ participants to be planted in the garden
~ Make recycling available by providing bins
~ Send electronic invitations and ask invitees to RSVP via email
~ Choose guest accommodations closest to the event venue and attractions
~ Offer a completely vegetarian menu with in-season fruits and vegetables, or use local free-range and grass-fed meat
~ Donate unconsumed food to the homeless shelter
~ Print material on recycled paper using vegetable-based inks, or eliminate paper handouts altogether by making transcripts available online
~ As an alternative to bottled water, position 5 gallon containers of water throughout the facility
~ Use compost-able food containers and cutlery
~ Ask people to bring travel mugs for coffee
~ Choose to work with vendors who share your environmental standards
